Why Gerda

RC3 / RC4 European Security Rating

Tested to BS EN 1627 — RC3 resists 5 minutes of sustained attack with heavy tools, RC4 resists up to 10 minutes. These are the highest residential security ratings available and exceed PAS 24:2022. Insurance underwriters recognise RC3 / RC4 doors and several insurers offer reduced home premiums for properties fitted with them.

1.2 – 2.0mm Reinforced Steel Construction

Galvanised steel panels with internal stiffeners, anti-bow reinforcements and a steel-clad jamb. Anti-spread plates around the lock and hinge sides resist crowbar and jack attacks. The full door leaf is built around a continuous steel frame — not a steel skin bonded to a timber core like cheaper alternatives.

Up to 12-Point Multi-Point Locking

Hardened steel hookbolts at the lock side plus opposing pins along the hinge side mean a Gerda door is anchored at up to 12 separate points around its frame. Cylinder is anti-snap, anti-drill, anti-pick TS007 3-star equivalent. Additional thumbturn deadlock available on request.

Multi-Layer Thermal Insulation

Sandwich construction of steel skin, mineral wool, polyurethane foam and a second steel skin delivers U-values comparable to high-end composite doors. Thermally broken jamb and threshold prevent cold-bridging. Acoustic performance is also superior — typically 32–35 dB Rw versus 25–28 dB for composite doors.

200+ RAL Powder-Coated Finishes

External face powder-coated in any RAL Classic colour with optional structured, matt or satin finish. Wood-effect transfers (oak, walnut, anthracite woodgrain) available on request. Glazed sidelights, bullseye lights and panelled designs available — the door does not look like a budget steel door.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Gerda steel door?

Gerda is a premium steel security door brand manufactured in Poland. Each door is built around a continuous reinforced steel frame with 1.2 – 2.0mm galvanised steel panels, multi-layer thermal insulation, and up to 12-point multi-point locking. Gerda doors are tested to RC3 (BS EN 1627) as standard with RC4 available — the highest residential security ratings in Europe.

What does RC3 mean?

RC3 is a European resistance class tested to BS EN 1627. It certifies that the door withstood 5 minutes of sustained, deliberate attack by an experienced burglar with heavy tools (crowbars, hammers, drills). RC4 raises that to 10 minutes and is the standard typically specified for high-net-worth properties and insurance-rated installations. Both ratings exceed the UK PAS 24:2022 baseline.

How does Gerda compare to a composite door?

Composite doors are made of a GRP (fibreglass) skin bonded to a foam or timber core — typically 70mm thick. Gerda doors are built around a continuous reinforced steel frame with 1.2 – 2.0mm galvanised steel panels and a multi-layer insulated core. Security: Gerda is significantly stronger (RC3 / RC4 vs PAS 24). Thermal: comparable U-values. Acoustic: Gerda is better (32 – 35 dB Rw vs 25 – 28 dB). Aesthetics: comparable — Gerda offers 200+ RAL colours plus wood-effect transfers. Cost: Gerda is more expensive (£3,000 – £8,000 installed vs £1,800 – £3,500 for premium composite).

How much does a Gerda steel door cost?

Typical UK prices for Gerda installed by Vitrum Solutions: £3,000 – £4,500 for a single residential door in a standard RC3 specification, £4,500 – £6,000 with sidelight or upgraded panel design, £6,000 – £8,000 for RC4 with bespoke finishes or double-leaf installations. All fully installed, FENSA registered, with a 10-year CPA insurance-backed guarantee. Full breakdown: /blog/how-much-do-steel-doors-cost-uk.

Do Gerda steel doors rust?

No. The steel is hot-dip galvanised before powder coating, so even if the powder coat is scratched, the underlying galvanised layer prevents corrosion. Coastal and marine installations are warranted. Annual visual inspection of the threshold seal and lock is the only recommended maintenance — there is no painting, sealing or treatment required.

How long do Gerda steel doors last?

30+ years with minimal maintenance. The steel construction does not warp, swell, delaminate or shrink with seasonal humidity changes — issues that affect timber and lower-end composite doors. The multi-layer thermal insulation does not degrade. Locking mechanisms are serviceable and replaceable. Many Gerda installations from the early 2000s are still in original condition.

Will my insurer recognise a Gerda door?

Yes — RC3 and RC4 are the security standards underwriters look for on high-value home contents and buildings policies. Several UK insurers (including high-net-worth specialists like Hiscox, Chubb, AIG Private Client) explicitly require or discount for RC3+ certified doors on the front entrance of premium properties. We can supply the BS EN 1627 test certificate and FENSA installation documentation needed for the policy.

Do you install Gerda across Buckinghamshire and Berkshire?

Yes. Vitrum Solutions installs Gerda across Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Surrey, Hampshire, Hertfordshire and West London. Including Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross, Amersham, Marlow, Windsor, Ascot, Virginia Water, Weybridge, Cobham, Esher and all surrounding premium towns.
