Why ALTUS

88 mm — the thickest door in the Gerda range

ALTUS is the 88mm-thick top-spec door in the Gerda residential range. The extra depth versus THERMO PRIME's 75mm allows additional layers of multi-layer insulation in the door core (steel skin + mineral wool + polyurethane foam + second steel skin), which is what delivers the U-value advantage of 0.74–0.81 W/m²K — meaningfully better than any composite door on the market.

Class-leading thermal performance — U-value from 0.74 W/m²K

Whole-door U-value from 0.74 W/m²K — the best thermal performance in any Gerda residential door and significantly better than the typical 1.0-1.2 W/m²K of premium composite alternatives. Thermally broken jamb and threshold prevent cold-bridging at the perimeter where the door meets the wall. The thermal spec to choose when the front door is on a heated entrance hall and the property is pursuing a low-energy refurbishment standard.

BS EN 1627:2011 RC2 standard — recognised by UK insurers

ALTUS is RC2 certified to BS EN 1627:2011 as standard. RC2 resists casual forced-entry attempts with simple tools (screwdrivers, pliers, wedges) for at least 3 minutes — long enough that opportunistic break-in attempts are abandoned. Recognised by UK home insurance underwriters; several insurers including Hiscox, Chubb and AIG Private Client offer premium adjustments or explicitly require RC2+ certified doors on premium policies.

12-point multi-point locking + 3-star TS007-equivalent cylinder

Hardened steel hookbolts at the lock side plus opposing pins along the hinge side mean the ALTUS is anchored at up to 12 separate points around its frame when locked. Cylinder is anti-snap, anti-drill, anti-pick — TS007 3-star equivalent specification. Anti-spread plates around the lock and hinge sides resist crowbar and jack attacks. Optional thumbturn deadlock available.

200+ RAL colours and wood-effect finishes

External face powder-coated in any RAL Classic colour with optional structured, matt or satin finish. Wood-effect transfers (oak, walnut, anthracite woodgrain) available on request — visually indistinguishable from premium composite doors at conversational distance. Glazed sidelights, bullseye lights and panelled designs available so the door doesn't read as a budget industrial steel door.

All four Gerda ranges (ALTUS, THERMO PREMIUM, THERMO PRIME, OPTIMA) feed into our single Gerda Steel Doors product page. The configurator handles range selection, panel design, glazing, RAL finish and any sidelights or double-leaf configurations.

Gerda ALTUS — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Gerda ALTUS?

ALTUS is the 88mm-thick top-thermal-spec residential steel security door in the Gerda range. Whole-door U-value 0.74–0.81 W/m²K, RC2 standard certification under BS EN 1627:2011, up to 12-point multi-point locking, and 200+ RAL colour options including wood-effect transfers. It's the spec to choose when both thermal performance and security are top priorities — on premium homes pursuing low-energy refurbishment standards.

Why is ALTUS more thermal than the other Gerda ranges?

Door thickness. ALTUS is 88mm thick; THERMO PRIME is 75mm. The extra 13mm allows additional layers of multi-layer insulation in the door core (steel skin + mineral wool + polyurethane foam + second steel skin), which improves the whole-door U-value to 0.74–0.81 W/m²K (vs THERMO PRIME's 0.79–0.9 W/m²K). Both are excellent for steel security doors; ALTUS is the choice where every fraction of thermal performance matters.

Can I upgrade ALTUS to RC3 burglar resistance?

RC3 upgrade is available on the Gerda Optima and Thermo Premium ranges, not on ALTUS. ALTUS is RC2 standard. If you specifically want RC3 burglar resistance (sustained attack with heavy tools, 5+ minutes), the choice is /gerda/optima or /gerda/thermo-premium. If you want the best Gerda thermal spec and RC2 is sufficient (which it is for almost all premium UK homes outside specific high-risk zones), ALTUS is the right choice.

How does ALTUS compare to a Palladio composite door?

ALTUS is meaningfully more secure (RC2 BS EN 1627:2011 vs PAS 24:2022 baseline on Palladio) and more thermally efficient (U-value 0.74-0.81 W/m²K vs Palladio's 0.85 W/m²K solid / 0.98 W/m²K glazed). Palladio offers more design flexibility (decorative glazed centre panels, full glass-surround configurations, visible woodgrain texture) at a more accessible price point. For maximum thermal + security on a steel-effect aluminium-system facade, ALTUS. For a heritage/contemporary composite-door aesthetic with PAS 24 security, Palladio.

What sizes does ALTUS come in?

Made-to-measure within standard residential aperture ranges. Single-leaf and double-leaf entrance configurations available, with optional sidelights and transom panels. We confirm exact sizing and configuration at the survey stage; the structural opening detail matters because steel doors weigh significantly more than composite alternatives.

Does ALTUS rust?

No. The steel is hot-dip galvanised before powder coating, so even if the powder coat is scratched, the underlying galvanised layer prevents corrosion. Coastal and marine installations are warranted. Annual visual inspection of the threshold seal and lock is the only recommended maintenance — there's no painting, sealing or treatment required.

Will my insurer recognise ALTUS?

Yes — RC2 (BS EN 1627:2011) is the security rating UK insurers look for on home contents and buildings policies. Several insurers (including Hiscox, Chubb, AIG Private Client) explicitly require or discount for RC2+ certified doors on the front entrance of premium properties. We supply the BS EN 1627 test certificate and FENSA installation documentation needed for the policy.
