Why THERMO PREMIUM
RC3 upgrade — sustained heavy-tool attack resistance
RC3 (BS EN 1627:2011) certifies a door against a sustained, deliberate attack by an experienced burglar with heavy tools — crowbars, hammers, drills — for at least 5 minutes. RC2 covers casual opportunistic attacks; RC3 covers planned break-in attempts. THERMO PREMIUM is one of two Gerda residential ranges that supports the RC3 upgrade (the other is OPTIMA), making it the spec to choose when the property is in a higher-risk area or the homeowner specifically wants insurance-grade premium security.
Multi-layer thermal insulation
THERMO PREMIUM uses Gerda's multi-layer insulation core: steel skin + mineral wool + polyurethane foam + second steel skin. Combined with the thermally broken jamb and threshold (preventing cold-bridging at the perimeter), whole-door thermal performance comfortably exceeds Approved Document L for a residential entrance door, and tracks closer to high-end composite door performance than typical steel doors.
Up to 12-point multi-point locking
Hardened steel hookbolts at the lock side plus opposing pins along the hinge side mean the door is anchored at up to 12 separate points around its frame when locked. Cylinder is anti-snap, anti-drill, anti-pick — TS007 3-star equivalent. Anti-spread plates around the lock and hinge sides resist crowbar and jack attacks. Optional thumbturn deadlock available on request.
Recognised by premium UK home insurance underwriters
RC2 and RC3 (BS EN 1627:2011) are the security ratings UK insurers look for on home contents and buildings policies. Several insurers (Hiscox, Chubb, AIG Private Client) explicitly require or discount for RC2+ certified doors on the front entrance of premium properties. The RC3 upgrade on THERMO PREMIUM provides documented proof of compliance with the most demanding insurance specifications.
200+ RAL colours plus wood-effect transfers
External face powder-coated in any RAL Classic colour — anti-spread plates around the lock and hinge sides resist crowbar and jack attacks. Wood-effect transfers (oak, walnut, anthracite woodgrain) available on request, indistinguishable from premium composite at conversational distance. Glazed sidelights, bullseye lights and panelled designs available so the door doesn't read as an industrial security door.

Gerda THERMO PREMIUM — Frequently Asked Questions
What does the RC3 upgrade on THERMO PREMIUM mean?
RC3 (BS EN 1627:2011) is the European security Resistance Class for sustained burglary attacks — at least 5 minutes resistance to an experienced burglar with heavy tools (crowbars, hammers, drills). RC2 (the Gerda standard certification) certifies against casual forced-entry with simple tools. THERMO PREMIUM and OPTIMA are the two Gerda ranges where the RC3 upgrade is available — choose RC3 where the property is higher-risk or the homeowner specifically wants insurance-grade premium security.
How does THERMO PREMIUM compare to ALTUS?
ALTUS is the 88mm thermal-priority top-spec (U-value 0.74-0.81 W/m²K) but RC2 standard only — no RC3 upgrade. THERMO PREMIUM is the security-priority spec where RC3 upgrade is available. Both share the same multi-point locking, anti-snap cylinder and RAL colour range. Choose ALTUS for absolute thermal performance; choose THERMO PREMIUM where insurance-grade burglar resistance is the priority.
How does THERMO PREMIUM compare to OPTIMA?
Both support the RC3 upgrade. THERMO PREMIUM positions slightly higher in the Gerda residential hierarchy — better thermal insulation core construction and a wider standard-spec hardware range. OPTIMA is the more value-tier RC3 option. Both are RC3-eligible BS EN 1627:2011 spec — the choice usually comes down to budget and the specific aesthetic/hardware finishes wanted.
Will my insurer specifically require RC3?
Some high-net-worth household policies — particularly with Hiscox, Chubb and AIG Private Client — list RC3 (BS EN 1627:2011) as a required spec for the front entrance of premium properties. RC2 satisfies most standard premium policies; RC3 is the spec for the strictest underwriter requirements. We supply the BS EN 1627 test certificate as part of the installation documentation; check with your insurer before specifying.
Does the RC3 upgrade affect the door's appearance?
No — the RC3 upgrade is achieved via the locking mechanism (additional hookbolt density), the cylinder spec, the steel reinforcement geometry and anti-spread plate coverage. The visible external door face is identical: same RAL powder-coated finish, same panel designs, same sidelight/glazing options, same hardware finishes. From the kerb a RC3 THERMO PREMIUM looks identical to a RC2 standard door.
What's the difference between PAS 24 and BS EN 1627:2011?
PAS 24:2022 is the UK security baseline most domestic doors are tested to — it covers basic forced-entry resistance and is mandated for new-build dwellings. BS EN 1627:2011 is the European Resistance Class standard with five tiers (RC1-RC5) covering increasing levels of sustained attack resistance. RC2 (Gerda standard) and RC3 (Gerda upgrade) both exceed the PAS 24:2022 baseline, with RC3 being the stricter spec recognised by premium UK home insurance underwriters.
