The 3 Schuco AWS Window Systems

AWS 70.HI — the workhorse Schuco casement

70mm frame depth, sightline 117mm, Uf from 1.6 W/m²K, vent up to 160kg, glazing to 52mm. The standard Schuco residential casement window — used wherever the architectural priority is the full Schuco hardware ecosystem and PAS 24:2022 security spec. Supports the deepest glazing in the AWS family (52mm) so triple-glazed Low-E builds and acoustic-spec laminated combinations both fit without profile change.

AWS 70 SC Slimline — the architectural slim spec

70mm frame depth on a 63.5mm sightline — significantly slimmer than the AWS 70.HI's 117mm sightline. Glazing capacity to 34mm. The architectural spec for openings where the visual priority is maximum glass area on a slim aluminium sightline — most often specified on contemporary new builds and high-end refurbishments where the window reads as a frame holding glass rather than a frame bisecting it.

AWS 70 Tilt-and-Turn — outward-opening flexibility

Schuco's outward-opening tilt-and-turn window, available in 50/60/65/70mm frame depths with sightlines from 99mm. Tilt-and-turn function gives two opening modes from a single handle position: tilt-in for ventilation without leaving the window unsecured, full turn-in for cleaning the outside glass safely from inside (so the window is its own access point on upper floors). Used most often on first-and-above floor casements where escape access matters or where outward-projection is restricted by walkway / planting / boundary.

PAS 24:2022 + Class 4 air permeability

All Schuco AWS opening profiles are PAS 24:2022 certified with multi-point shootbolt locking, hidden hinges, internally-beaded glazing and laminated inner glass options. Tested to BS EN 12207 Class 4 air permeability — the maximum air-tightness rating, meaningfully reducing draughts and heat loss versus standard aluminium frames. Secured by Design configurations available on opening profiles where the spec calls for it.

Full RAL colour and dual-finish options

Available across the full RAL colour palette (over 200 finishes), anodised finishes (champagne, bronze, dark grey), and dual-colour configurations (one finish inside, a different one outside). The architectural advantage of aluminium versus uPVC — colour stability is a function of the finishing process and aluminium's metal substrate, not foil layers, so dark colours and bold finishes don't fade or peel over time.

Schuco AWS Windows — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Schuco AWS 70.HI and AWS 70 SC Slimline?

AWS 70.HI is the standard Schuco residential casement — 70mm frame depth, 117mm sightline, glazing capacity to 52mm (so it accommodates the deepest triple-glazed and acoustic units in the AWS family). AWS 70 SC Slimline is the architectural slim variant — same 70mm frame depth but a 63.5mm sightline (about 46% slimmer than 70.HI) and glazing capacity to 34mm. Choose AWS 70.HI when you need the deepest glazing or maximum thermal headroom; choose AWS 70 SC when the architectural priority is slim sightlines on contemporary specs.

What is a tilt-and-turn window?

Tilt-and-turn gives two opening modes from a single handle. Turning the handle 90° lets the top of the sash tilt inwards (or outwards on the outward-opening AWS 70 Tilt-and-Turn) for secure ventilation — the window is open but not hinge-clear so it can't be reached. Turning the handle 180° unlocks full hinge function so the sash opens fully — useful for cleaning the outside glass from inside (relevant for upper floors) or for fire-escape access. The function is standard on AWS 70 Tilt-and-Turn.

What U-values do Schuco AWS aluminium windows achieve?

AWS 70.HI achieves Uf (frame U-value) from 1.6 W/m²K. With double-glazed Low-E units the whole-window Uw typically lands around 1.2-1.4 W/m²K — comfortably exceeding the Approved Document L 1.4 W/m²K maximum. With triple-glazed units the whole-window Uw drops further. AWS 70 SC Slimline and AWS 70 Tilt-and-Turn track similar performance ranges depending on glazing spec. Specific Uw is calculated per opening based on the chosen glazing unit and frame size at quote stage.

Are aluminium windows more energy efficient than uPVC?

Modern thermally-broken aluminium windows like Schuco AWS 70.HI achieve thermal performance comparable to premium uPVC systems like Rehau TOTAL70 (both reach Uw from around 1.2 W/m²K with a standard Low-E double-glazed unit). The 'aluminium is colder than uPVC' generalisation comes from older non-thermally-broken aluminium frames; current Schuco AWS profiles use polyamide thermal break geometry that separates the cold outside metal from the warm inside metal. Where aluminium wins is sightline slimness, frame longevity (25+ year frame guarantee), colour stability and the ability to span larger openings without midrails.

How does Schuco AWS compare to Cortizo Cor 70 Hidden Sash?

Both are premium aluminium casement systems on a 70mm frame. Schuco AWS 70.HI's distinguishing strengths are the AWS 70 SC Slimline variant (63.5mm sightline) and the AWS 70 Tilt-and-Turn outward-opening option. Cortizo Cor 70 Hidden Sash hides the opening sash within the frame depth so a closed casement reads as a single fixed glass panel — a different aesthetic priority than slim sightlines. Where the brief is open, we walk you through both at the survey stage. Side-by-side: /blog/cortizo-vs-schuco.

Can Schuco AWS windows have any RAL colour?

Yes — across the full RAL colour palette (over 200 colours) plus anodised finishes (champagne, bronze, dark grey, black) and dual-colour configurations where the inside and outside of the frame are different finishes. Aluminium colour stability comes from the powder-coat or anodising process applied to the metal substrate rather than from a foil layer, so dark colours and bold finishes don't fade or peel over decades — a meaningful advantage versus dark uPVC on south-facing installations.

Are Schuco AWS windows Secured by Design?

Yes — Secured by Design configurations are available across the AWS opening-profile range. SBD is the UK police-approved security spec, recognised by Hiscox, Chubb, AIG and other premium home insurers. PAS 24:2022 certification is standard across all opening profiles; SBD adds specific hardware and laminated-glass combinations on top.
