Why Gerda

BS EN 1627:2011 RC2 Standard, RC3 Upgrade

Tested to BS EN 1627:2011 RC2 across the range, with RC3 upgrade available on the Optima and Thermo Premium ranges. RC2 resists casual forced-entry attack; RC3 adds sustained attack with heavy tools (crowbars, hammers, drills). Both certifications exceed the PAS 24:2022 baseline mandated for new-build dwellings. Insurance underwriters recognise RC2 / RC3 ratings and several insurers offer premium adjustments for certified steel security doors.

1.2 – 2.0mm Reinforced Steel Construction

Galvanised steel panels with internal stiffeners, anti-bow reinforcements and a steel-clad jamb. Anti-spread plates around the lock and hinge sides resist crowbar and jack attacks. The full door leaf is built around a continuous steel frame — not a steel skin bonded to a timber core like cheaper alternatives.

Up to 12-Point Multi-Point Locking

Hardened steel hookbolts at the lock side plus opposing pins along the hinge side mean a Gerda door is anchored at up to 12 separate points around its frame. Cylinder is anti-snap, anti-drill, anti-pick TS007 3-star equivalent. Additional thumbturn deadlock available on request.

Multi-Layer Thermal Insulation

Sandwich construction of steel skin, mineral wool, polyurethane foam and a second steel skin delivers U-values comparable to high-end composite doors. Thermally broken jamb and threshold prevent cold-bridging. Acoustic performance is also superior — typically 32–35 dB Rw versus 25–28 dB for composite doors.

200+ RAL Powder-Coated Finishes

External face powder-coated in any RAL Classic colour with optional structured, matt or satin finish. Wood-effect transfers (oak, walnut, anthracite woodgrain) available on request. Glazed sidelights, bullseye lights and panelled designs available — the door does not look like a budget steel door.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Gerda steel door?

Gerda is a premium steel security door brand manufactured in Poland. Each door is built around a continuous reinforced steel frame with up to 12-point multi-point locking. The main UK ranges are ALTUS (88mm thick, U-value 0.74–0.81 W/m²K), THERMO PREMIUM, THERMO PRIME (75mm, U-value 0.79–0.9 W/m²K) and OPTIMA. All Gerda doors are tested to RC2 (BS EN 1627:2011) as standard, with RC3 upgrade available on the Optima and Thermo Premium ranges.

What do RC2 and RC3 mean?

RC2 and RC3 are European security Resistance Classes tested to BS EN 1627:2011. RC2 certifies a door against a casual forced-entry attempt with simple tools. RC3 certifies a door against a sustained, deliberate attack by an experienced burglar with heavy tools (crowbars, hammers, drills). Both exceed the UK PAS 24:2022 baseline that most domestic doors meet, and both are widely recognised by home insurance underwriters.

How does Gerda compare to a composite door?

Composite doors use a GRP (fibreglass) skin or full monocoque shell over an insulated core, typically 65mm thick (e.g. Palladio). Gerda doors are built around a continuous reinforced steel frame with multi-layer insulation. Security: Gerda is meaningfully stronger (RC2 BS EN 1627:2011 standard, RC3 upgrade vs the PAS 24:2022 baseline most composite doors carry). Thermal: comparable whole-door U-values. Acoustic: Gerda performs better (typically 32–35 dB Rw vs 25–28 dB). Aesthetics: Gerda offers 200+ RAL colours plus wood-effect transfers.

How much does a Gerda steel door cost?

Final price depends on the range (ALTUS or THERMO PRIME), door size, glazing, RAL finish and any sidelights or double-leaf configurations. Every Vitrum Solutions installation includes FENSA certification and a 10-year CPA insurance-backed guarantee. Request a free no-obligation quote: 0800 861 1450.

Does Gerda's powder coat resist coastal corrosion?

Yes. The steel is hot-dip galvanised before powder coating, so even if the powder coat is scratched, the underlying galvanised layer prevents corrosion. Coastal and marine installations are warranted. Annual visual inspection of the threshold seal and lock is the only recommended maintenance. There is no painting, sealing or treatment required. For a long-form review of Gerda's rust-resistance and material engineering, see /blog/gerda-doors-review-uk.

How long do Gerda steel doors last?

30+ years with minimal maintenance. The steel construction does not warp, swell, delaminate or shrink with seasonal humidity changes — issues that affect timber and lower-end composite doors. The multi-layer thermal insulation does not degrade. Locking mechanisms are serviceable and replaceable. Many Gerda installations from the early 2000s are still in original condition.

Will my insurer recognise a Gerda door?

Yes — RC2 and RC3 (BS EN 1627:2011) are the security ratings underwriters look for on home contents and buildings policies. Several UK insurers (including high-net-worth specialists like Hiscox, Chubb, AIG Private Client) explicitly require or discount for RC2+ certified doors on the front entrance of premium properties. We can supply the BS EN 1627 test certificate and FENSA installation documentation needed for the policy.

Do you install Gerda across Buckinghamshire and Berkshire?

Yes. Vitrum Solutions installs Gerda across Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Surrey, Hampshire, Hertfordshire and West London. Including Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross, Amersham, Marlow, Windsor, Ascot, Virginia Water, Weybridge, Cobham, Esher and all surrounding premium towns.
