The 2 Cortizo Bifold Systems
Bi-Fold — the standard Cortizo bifold
Cortizo's standard residential bifold. Max sash 1.2 m × 3 m, PAS 24:2022 certified opening profiles, multi-point locking, full Cortizo hardware ecosystem and the complete RAL colour palette plus anodised finishes. The workhorse spec for UK rear-extension and patio openings where premium aluminium quality is wanted without the architectural-slim premium of the Plus.
Bi-fold Plus Door — slim premium tier
The slim premium bifold in the Cortizo range. Same 1.2 m × 3 m max sash as the standard Bi-Fold but with a 110 mm reduced central junction — the visible meeting-point of two folding leaves. Where the architect's spec calls for unbroken visual flow across the bifold span, the Plus's slimmer central junction makes the eye read the closed door as a near-uninterrupted glass plane more than a frame structure. The premium choice on contemporary new builds.
Spanish-engineered, thermally broken
Cortizo is one of Europe's leading aluminium profile manufacturers, headquartered in northwestern Spain. Profiles are extruded, anodised or powder-coated and assembled through Cortizo's own QA process before reaching UK fabrication. Polyamide thermal break separates the cold outside metal from the warm inside metal, and the multi-chamber profile keeps the structure dimensionally stable across UK seasonal temperature swings.
PAS 24:2022 + Secured by Design configurations
All Cortizo bifold opening profiles are PAS 24:2022 certified with multi-point shootbolt locking, hidden hinges, internally-beaded glazing and laminated inner glass options. Secured by Design configurations available where insurance or new-build specifications require it — a UK police-approved spec recognised by Hiscox, Chubb, AIG and other premium home insurers.
Full RAL colour palette + dual-finish options
Available across the full RAL colour palette (over 200 finishes) plus anodised options (champagne, bronze, dark grey, black) and dual-colour configurations (one finish inside, a different one outside). Aluminium colour stability comes from the powder-coat or anodising process applied to the metal substrate, not from a foil layer, so dark colours and bold finishes don't fade or peel over decades.

What is the difference between Cortizo Bi-Fold and Bi-fold Plus Door?
Both are premium Cortizo aluminium bifolds with the same 1.2 m × 3 m max sash size and the same Cortizo hardware ecosystem. The difference is the central junction — the visible meeting point where two folding leaves come together. Bi-fold Plus Door has a 110 mm reduced central junction, making it the slim premium tier; Bi-Fold has the standard junction. Choose Bi-fold Plus Door when the architectural priority is unbroken visual flow across the bifold span; Bi-Fold otherwise.
How does Cortizo bifold compare to Schuco bifold?
Both are premium aluminium bifolds with comparable thermal performance and security spec. Cortizo's distinguishing strength on bifolds is the Bi-fold Plus Door with its 110 mm reduced central junction (visually slimmer central interlock between leaves). Schuco's strength is the AS FD 90.HI Passivhaus-grade thermal upgrade. Where the architect has specified one, we install that; where the brief is open, we walk you through both at the survey stage. Side-by-side comparison: /blog/cortizo-vs-schuco.
How wide can a Cortizo bifold open?
Each individual leaf is up to 1.2 m × 3 m on both Bi-Fold and Bi-fold Plus Door. Total opening width depends on the leaf count chosen — typical UK rear-extension openings (4-6 m wide) are spanned in 3- to 7-leaf layouts, with the leaves folding and stacking to one or both sides depending on the configuration. The exact panel and overall span for your opening is confirmed at the survey stage.
What U-values do Cortizo bifolds achieve?
Cortizo's thermally broken profiles deliver excellent whole-product U-values. With double-glazed Low-E units the whole-window Uw lands around 1.2-1.4 W/m²K — comfortably exceeding the Approved Document L 1.4 W/m²K maximum for replacement windows and doors. With triple-glazed units the Uw drops further. Specific Uw is calculated per opening based on the chosen glazing unit, frame size and thermal spec at quote stage.
Are Cortizo bifolds Secured by Design?
Yes — Secured by Design configurations are available across the Cortizo bifold range. SBD is the UK police-approved security spec, recognised by Hiscox, Chubb, AIG and other premium home insurers. PAS 24:2022 certification is standard across opening profiles; SBD adds specific hardware and laminated-glass combinations on top.
Can I get Cortizo bifolds in any RAL colour?
Yes — full RAL palette (over 200 colours), plus anodised finishes (champagne, bronze, dark grey, black) and dual-colour configurations where the inside and outside of the frame are different finishes. The colour is applied to the aluminium substrate through powder-coating or anodising rather than a surface foil, so it doesn't fade or peel over decades — a meaningful advantage on south-facing installations versus dark uPVC.
Do you install Cortizo bifolds in conservation areas?
Bifold doors are not usually a conservation-area decision point — most conservation councils focus on visible street-facing windows and front doors rather than rear-of-property doors. Cortizo bifolds are almost always rear-extension installs, so they're rarely the planning issue. Where the rear of the property is also conservation-sensitive, talk to us at the survey stage; we can flag what your local planning authority typically accepts.
