Hemel Hempstead is the largest town in the Borough of Dacorum and one of the post-war new towns, designated in 1947 with plans first drawn up by the architect Geoffrey Jellicoe. The new town grew around an older market town. Most of Hemel Hempstead was built as part of the new town. The first new-town houses went up at Adeyfield in 1949, Bennetts End, Chaulden and Warner's End followed in the early 1950s, and Grovehill began in 1967, giving the town a large stock of post-war suburban terraces, semi-detached houses and low-rise flats.
